When the rains did not stop
Long before he became the emperor of India, Jehangir, Prince Salim for all and sundry and Sheikhu for his father Akbar, used to go hunting in forested country some miles west of Lahore. Later, after a pet deer died, he ordered the building of a memorial tower as well as a water tank and pavilion. He also had a fort built nearby and called it either Jehangirpura or Jehangirabad. Today we know it as Sheikhupura after the emperor's childhood name.
Aside: both the emperor's names, that is, Sheikhu and Salim are after the saint Sheikh Salim Chishti for whom Akbar had great regard.
Like his father Akbar, Jehangir was a great exterminator of wildlife whose Tuzk (diary) lists at various places rosters of all the animals he bagged during his hunts. Indeed, without seeing the irony in it, subsequent to one hunt his diary complains of the paucity of his bag. But one supposes those were times when nobody connected dwindling wildlife with wanton hunting.
Towards the fag end of the monsoon of 1620, Jehangir was encamped with his wives and court at Jehangirabad. It was the month of October and the monsoon had not yet petered out. As the court began the short journey back to Lahore, the rains continued to fall. And they fell with a vengeance.
Now, the Degh River that rises in the hills below Jummu, flows past Sialkot and dumps itself into the Ravi south of Lahore, lies between Jehangir's hunting lodge and Lahore city. As the royal caravan neared its banks, it was found to be a roaring, surging alluvial-red torrent. It was impossible to get across even astride the elephants. For four days the royal court was held up until the sodden tents became too much for the king and his family.
The rains eventually let up, the water receded and the procession passed on to Lahore. Those were days when monsoon rains were what young people today have never known. Indeed, anyone who cannot recall the rains of 1973 and again three years later takes a shower of fifteen minutes to be a monsoon shower. Those were days when the rain would not cease once it began. When it started to come down it would continue for days on end until the rivers flowed over their banks to flood farmland and cities.
To forestall a future repeat of the hold up on the Degh, Jehangir ordered the throwing of a bridge across the river that is normally fordable. To this day the bridge spans the river and serves as a connection between the village of Kot Pindi Das and the Lahore-Sheikhupura highroad.
Haroon, my young companion, and I asked for the umpteenth time for Kot Pindi Das before turning off the highway to the right (north). The new black-top road had not been there when I first went this way nearly twenty years ago. This branch lies just after one goes over the Degh River bridge heading for Sheikhupura and is about eighteen kilometres short of the latter. Kot Pindi Das is six kilometres from the turning and the bridge itself lies a kilometre southeast.
We were joined by a trio of pre-teenage boys who said the bridge was probably built by the angrez. I smiled and by way of explanation the tallest among them said all such things had been done by the angrez, hadn't they. When I told them the bridge was nearly four hundred years old and that was much before the angrez, they wanted to know how I knew. They had heard of the Chugattas -- the variation of Chughtai by which the Mughals are known in parts of Punjab, but Jehangir was a name that rang no bells for them.
The bridge is actually two separate structures about thirty metres apart. The one to the south has two arches while the main structure is lop-sided with a main arch flanked by two smaller arches on one side and one on the other. And the once-good river Degh that flows beneath now stinks with dark untreated poison that it carries down from the factories of Kala Shah Kaku.
Yet buffaloes wallowed in the poison and I found myself wondering what sort of milk we would be getting in Lahore if they also drank the water. When I warned my three local companions against swimming in the river, the tall one said the river was good. A minute later he had stripped and was paddling about midstream.
Thirty years after this bridge was built, in October 1652, Shah Jehan face a similar situation as his father: the rains had persisted and the Degh was flooded. Only this time, the flood was so high that even the bridge was submerged. Once again the royal camp had to halt four days because "certain members of the forward party of the entourage had already been swept away..."
Floods in the Degh have passed out of living memory. Surely 1976 would have seen the swollen river almost touching the top of the arches. After that, rains steadily dwindled away to a time that we now regard a fifteen-minute shower a proper fall of rain. Meanwhile, the bridge continues to serve. We saw tractors with trailers laden with sand or bricks going back and forth and I stood at a respectable distance regarding the crumbling foundations of the bridge piers.
There is a branch of the Degh called the Chhoti or Lesser Degh not many miles to the west. That too has a bridge; only that one collapsed, so they claimed, during the floods of 1976. Its debris lies in the bed of the stream and I cannot but wonder if overuse by laden trailers and lack of maintenance will one day cause the demise of this bridge during a similar flood that may yet come one day.

I have been in receipt of this extensive list of Asif Zardari’s Local and International holdings sent to me via a number of sources, in all honesty I have no way of precisely confirming the authenticity of this list but place it on this blog in an attempt to figure out what true what is simply hype. There is little doubt in my mind that this list may be quite close to being authentic considering the massive corruption that has plagued Pakistan in his previous two tenures in power, little to know that the Metamorphosis of 2008 which changed the way he appeared orchestrated after the assassination of his wife on 27th December 2007. Are we to believe in a ‘rejuvenated, honest by-the-books leader’, or are we gearing up to push Zardari further up into Pakistans Rich List of 2008 where he was previously ranked at #2.
I can also suspect that the sudden revelation if this list could be a deliberate retaliation by the ‘agencies’ to push Zardari on the back foot and move off Musharraf’s impeachment attack. Whatever be the case this massive list is jaw dropping amazing, I have no idea about the total valuation of the wealth itemized here but I suspect it could easily be an aggregated wealth as listed = £900m / ($1.8billion) or more

There was once a scientist. After a lot of practice & efforts, he developed a formula & learned the art of reproducing himself. He did it so perfectly that it was impossible to tell the reproduction from the original.
One day while doing his research, he realized that the Angel of Death was searching for him. In order to remain alive he reproduced a dozen copies of himself. The reproduction was so similar that all of them looked exactly like him.

Why is Altaf Hussain afraid of Taliban?
MQM, formerly an ethic group and now a secular political force is quite vocal against Taliban in Karachi in last few months. Altaf Hussain has issued number of warnings to Karachi residents and to highest govt authorities about it.
Most recent is when he was quoting famous Sufi saint of Sind, Shah Latif poetry in which he had pointed that, “the land of Sind could have problems from people of Qandahar, a place in Afghanistan .” MQM London based founder is now attributing the Shah’s poetry as a warning symbol against the people of Qandahar – Taliban presence in Karachi .
There are various factors based on that MQM feels threatened by Taliban in Karachi and over all Sind province:
1. Taliban was founded by Naseer ullah Babar, former interior minister in Benazir led PPP govt, who had devised most cruel strategy of his time – by killing MQM activists involved in heinous crimes without any judicial trial, through Police encounters. The reason he had presented was even more gruesome & worth noting, as “if I take them to court for judicial trial they would set free soon due to missing evidences.” His draconian approach had made him the most ruthless minister of his time however he had cleansed Karachi from number of armed activists who had taken the city hostage like Khajji ground. Today, MQM feels that Taliban, if come over to Karachi , could follow the same approach while dealing with terrorists of Karachi & Hyderabad !
2. Taliban, though founded during Benazir era, are now engaged with PPP-led NWFP govt in setting up peace deal, and hence if they dominate Karachi , they could deal with PPP or ANP easily.
3. Taliban spokesperson, Muslim Khan, is an old ally of PPP and had lived larger span of his life in exile and now an active participant of its hardcore religious ideology.
4. Taliban could form a loose alliance with other religious-political parties active in Karachi or Hyderabad to take over the city. Fazlur Rahman religious schools influence is also visible in Karachi and interior Sind .. He is an all time opportunist and could tilt towards Taliban, if find them in a power-sharing situation.
5.. There are number of religious schools of Deubandi thoughts (Madrasas) in Karachi such as Jamia Binnoria in New Town & Site led by Mufti Naeem, Darul Uloom in Korangi led by Mufti Rafi & Taqi Usmanis, Jamia Farooqia in Shah Faisal colony led Maulana Saleem Ullah Khan & his sons – for all of them Taliban should have soft corner as all of them have favoured Afghan Jihad, during General Zia era, and many of the Taliban students have been graduated from these institutions directly or indirectly.
6. Maulana Sami ul Haq, of Aqura Khatak, has received the heroic welcome (like a bridegroom) from Taliban, when he visited Kabul during 2000, is also in line with Karachi-based Deubandi religious schools.
7. Another religious force, Jamat e Islami, though not getting popular votes in Karachi , but likely an alternative political & likeminded force, acceptable to Taliban, if they strike here in Sind after NWFP.
8. Barelvi faction is also a silent but a strong force in Karachi environment, represented by either Sunni Tehreek during Rabi ul Awal processions or Shah Turab ul Haq Qadri’s group. Their almost all of the main leadership was killed during a religious procession few years back and MQM activist were prime suspects, or miscellaneous religious small groups such as Gulzar e Habib, could not be difficult segments for Deubandi religious forces like Taliban to form a loose association at govt level.
9. By looking at the teachings of Dawat e Islami (those who wear green turban), activists of Jamiet ulma e Pakistan (those who wears brown turban) and Tablighei Jamat’s Makki and Madani mosques followers – all of them, beside few main differences, are all in favour of similar interpretation of Shariah - growing beard for men, observing veil for women, five times prayers in mosques and other basics tents of Islam. Such elements shall not stage confrontations with Taliban or any religious force that enforce Shariah directly, if they come in power in Karachi .
10. The heroic welcome of Umm e Hissan, wife of Maulana Abdul Aziz, administrator of Madrasha Hafsa & Lal Mosque, Islamabad, when she visited Karachi, has open the eyes of number of political activists including MQM in the city.
11. The rise of religious education among females is becoming a new phenomenon in Karachi . Schools like Madrash e Aysha in Gulistan e Juhar, a vicinity in Karachi , is meant for only girls where Quranic education including Hifz (memorization) is imparted free of charge. This religious seminary is run by a female who is direct descendent of one of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, late Chaudhry Muhammad Ali and is close relative of former Senate Chairman and Law Minister in Nawaz Sharif’s cabinet. This could help identify the elites in Karachi are turning themselves towards religion.
12. Other than such religious forces, when I visited Karachi last month, I have noticed every second man has grown beard, every third woman was observing veil and many of the young population, regardless of the sect they belong to or practice, were offering prayers in mosques quite religiously. All this tilt is pointing towards a new approach of rising Islamism among Karachi residents regardless of the fact that they have been forced towards secularism by a political party or its splinter groups in last two decades.
With above religious factors, silently active in Karachi environment, it is quite easily understood that MQM founding father is feeling threatened as these religious forces could get unified any moment by forming an alliance against corruption, lawlessness, and other street crimes in the city provided they have some support to counter the armed retaliation of MQM. Taliban could become a counter force!
Karachi residents are still vocal about the crimes in the city and business community members are sceptical about Bhattas (money collected by force from shop keepers & business men), skins or mobile snatching especially during eid days and pick-pocket activities by politically affiliated youngsters. MQM leadership shall not be held responsible for unit-level workers crime activities however this has paved the way for a bigger change at Sind level – right from the Chief Minister to Governor Levels, a need of a sincere political leadership!

Fake Islamic websites...a threat to Islam
Undoubtedly current age is age of internet and millions of people use
internet all around the world. Previously internet was used for only
dissemination of information but now it is also being used as
propaganda tool. You can get information about history,sports,religion
any other thing u like from internet,for getting information about
your favorite topic you should have little bit of know how about
internet, you can get loads of information from different websites
present on the internet.
Internet is usefull tool for getting information but in last few years
some criminal minded people are using this wonderfull invention of
science for negative purposes,this is unfortunate but this thing also
happened many times with other great inventions of Science such as
Dynamite which was invented by Alfred Nobel for the benefit of
humanity but we misused it and we are using it for the destruction of
humanity.today.Internet is also being used for wrong purposes such as
spreading Misinformation about Islam. Actually these websites are
production of people having destructive minds who are spreading wrong
interpretation of Islam.
Here interesting thing to note is that whenever we see negative usage
of internet it is always against Muslims which is very regrettable.
There are lots of websites who have poisonous material against Muslims
and Islam. We gave them the name of Fake Islamic websites or Anti
Islamic Websites. Enemies of Islam are trying to deceive Muslims but
actually they are deceiving themselves which is very clearly mentioned
in following verse of Quran
"They seek to deceive Allah and the believers, and in fact, they
deceive not but their own souls, and they perceive not." (Surah Al-Baqara)
RAW involvement in Lahore Attack facilitate by Governer's Rule and PPP
All those officers working to protect the Sri Lankan team under Shahbaz
Sharif were removed. The ensuing chaos created by Taseer, Zardari and Rehman
Malik and the use of police officers for horse trading gave the RAW sponsored
terrorists an opening.
Rehman Malik was the security Chief of Benazir when she was assassinated. He
was Interior Minister when Marriot blasts took place and even today he is
interior minister. Why does he remain Interior Minister when he delivers a
failure after failure? Because he is close to Zardari. And that is all that matters
today.

Investigative report emerges [22nd

showing threat to Sri Lanka team
A secretinvestigative report has just surfaced prepared by the Additional Inspector
General of the Crime Investigation Division, Punjab
on 22nd January 2009 outlining the potential threat to the Sri Lankan team. It
outlines very briefly the following four points
- It has reliably been learnt that “RAW” (Indian
Intelligence Agency) has assigned its agents the task to target Sri Lankan
Cricket Team during its current visit to Lahore, especially while traveling between the hotel and
stadium or at the hotel during their stay - It is evident that RAW intends to show Pakistan as a security risk state for
sports events particularly when European and India
teams have already postponed their proposed visits considering it a high
security risk to visit Pakistan. - RAW has also collected photographs of leaders of
Jamaat-ud-Daawa (Proscribed) and its establishment to target them - Extreme vigilance and heightened security
arrangements indicated
The
report may now all seem inconsequential
considering the damage has already been done, but it just goes to show that
despite all the warnings there still was a massive security lapse blame for
which in my opinion my lie squarely upon the Governor of Punjab, Salman Taaseer
who very recently bull dozed his governors
rule in the province over replacing Shahbaz Sharif.
This political shuffle resulted in a sudden administrative upheaval, which can
potentially be the cause of this disaster.
Critics
may even shrug aside this report as a finger pointing session towards RAW, but
that too should not shroud our mind the plan simple fact is that the Police knew of the looming threat and if they were
at all serious in doing their job this would never have happened.
The extremist element will exploit any situation and today marks yet another
lapse for the umpteenth time, further tarnishing the image of Pakistan, maybe
forever

to NewsEye at DawnNews the Pakistan Cricket Board had promised the visiting
team Presidential security, but it has not been provided despite these looming
threats by RAW.
